A holiday trip to Croatia: What you need to cross the border

May 16, 2021.

You have finally decided to spend your well-deserved vacation in Croatia. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the rules at the borders. We give you instructions to reduce the stress of traveling to Croatia.

BEFORE THE JOURNEY

To reduce unnecessary waiting at the border, we advise you, before departure, to fill in the arrival announcement via the Enter Croatia application.

Check if your region is on the green list at this link: European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). If you come from a green list area and have not stayed in transit areas, you are in luck. You can enter Croatia under the same conditions as before the onset of the Covid-19 without any confirmations and tests.

WHAT I HAVE TO PRESENT AT THE BORDER

If you come from the EU and are not on the green list, then you must present one of the following:

  • Negative PCR test or rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2. The period between taking a swab and arriving at the border crossing must be no longer than 48 hours. Only the Common List of Rapid Antigen Tests mutually recognized by the EU Member States are recognized, so make sure your test lists an approved manufacturer.
  • Confirmation that you received a second dose of vaccine (for Johnson & Johnson first and only one dose) against COVID-19 more than 14 days ago
  • If you have had COVID-19 and have a medical certificate, or a positive PCR or rapid antigen test, and received at least one dose of vaccine after the illness, the exemption from presenting a negative PCR or rapid antigen test or self-isolation is extended to five months after vaccination.
  • A positive PCR or rapid antigen test confirming that you have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 virus infection in the last 180 days but not older than 11 days from the date of arrival at the border crossing. A certificate of illness issued by a doctor is also valid;
  • Or, (not recommended) to perform PCR testing or rapid antigen testing for SARS-CoV-2 immediately upon arrival in Croatia (at your own expense). You have to be self-isolated until a negative result arrives. In case of the impossibility of testing, you will have to be ten days in self-isolation.

Children under the age of seven have no border restrictions if their parents/guardians have one of the above certificates.

Currently, in the off-season, there are no long waitings at the borders. Since they are common in the summer, you can expect them. If you are not new to Croatia, we believe you are familiar with the long waits.

WHAT ARE THE COVID RESTRICTIONS IN CROATIA?

During their stay in Croatia, all passengers must adhere to the general and special recommendations and instructions of the Croatian Institute of Public Health. Important is that you have to wear masks indoors, restaurants and bars are only open on the terraces until 10 pm. You do not have to wear a mask outdoors if you can keep a distance of 1.5m from other people. Therefore, enjoy the fresh smell of the forests and the sea of Croatia!
